中国古代典籍中表示一般性否定的否定副词主要有“不”和“弗”，前者主 要用于否定动词性成分，后者主要用于否定形容词性成分。这种一般性否定的 情形在古代汉语中非常普遍，典籍汉英翻译的处理方法相对而言也更为灵活。 否定副词“非”的英译也是如此，翻译实践中可以借用介词短语（prepositionalphrase)、分词短语（participial phrase)来实现否定谓语的功能。比如，《论语》 记载孔子家的马棚失火后，孔子退朝回来的第一反应是“曰：‘伤人乎？ 7不问马”。 汉英翻译时，如果译为 He asked，“Anybody injured?” He didn’t ask anything aboutthe horses.就会显得平淡无奇，而改用分词短语instead of asking about the horses就可以使得译文表达活灵活现。“故不登髙山，不知天之高也”中的“故 不登高山”也是如此，使用介词短语without climbing the high mountains或分词 短语having not climbed the high mountains较之if引导的条件状语从句要精简得 多。这里重点以“不”“毋”和“非”的相关句子为例，探讨典籍英译中否定副 词的有效变通活用模式。
例 : 故善人者，不善人之师；不善人者，善人之资。不贵其师，不爱其 资，虽智大迷，是谓要妙。（《老子?第二十七章》）
原文的意思是善人可以作为不善人的老师，不善人可以作为善人的借鉴。 不尊重老师，不重视借鉴，虽然自以为聪明，其实是大糊涂。这就是幽深的奥 妙。“不善”中的“不”作为否定词是用来否定后面的形容词“善”，而“不贵 其师，不爱其资”中的“不”则用于否定谓语动词“贵”和“爱”。作为形容词 的反义词，“善”对“恶”，“好”对“坏”，未必非得使用否定词“不”，说成“不 善”或，正是汉语的精妙之处。译为英语也是如此，大可不必非要使用not来否 定，完全可用bad，unkind等词来替代，以求表达之简洁。
