如何依据表达目的介词省略不译

翻译公司的译员在典籍汉英翻译的过程中，如果按照对等的原则将汉语中的介词相应地译 为英语中的介词，非但不能达到预期的修辞效果，反而显得更为累赘，甚至有 违句法，则应当以不译为宜，放弃一一对应，实现原语文本含义的完整传递。 德国的斯内尔霍恩比也认为，翻译是一种“跨文化的事件”，不能拘泥于文字 层面的对等（MarySnell-Homey，2001: 39)。
例1：河曲智叟无！应。（《列书?汤问》）
根据“愚公移山”的故事，“无以应”也作“亡以应”，意思是指河曲智叟 “不知道该怎么应答或没有办法回答”，原因是“无话可说” had nothing to say, 结果是“没有回答” made no reply,让人回味和反思“河曲智叟”为何“无以应” 这样一个局面。通过两者对比不难看出，翻译成made no reply显得更为客观真 实，省略原文介词之后的表达效果反而更好。当然，考虑到故事渲染“智叟” 落得个“哑口无言”的尴尬下场，还可以使用was struck dump来增强戏剧性效果。原文的介词在此不译为英语中相应的介词，效果反而更好。笔者试译： Zhisou, the old wise man from Hequ, was struck dump.
例2：或问土曾西曰：“吾与子路孰贤？ ”（《孟子?公孙丑上》）
曾子的孙子曾西非常敬佩子路，当有人问起他，“您和子路哪一个更贤德 呢？”曾西回答说连他自己的爷爷曾子都非常敬畏子路，他自己又怎能和子路相比。 赵题陶等（1999: 55)的译文是 Someone asked Zeng Xi，“how do you compare with Zilii?”。赵译釆用直译，使用动词进行对比。但笔者以为，赵译将you变成 了 compare的执行者，而非原著里面“被比较”的对象。因两人对比实际上是 个人道德修养和品行等方面的比较，故更倾向于使用形容词。另外，原文中的 “吾子”属于尊称，相当于“您”，介词“乎”没有实际的意义，主要用来引进 动作“问”的对象。类似的句子还有“穆公访诸蹇叔”，可以直接说Duke Mu visited Jianshu,较之使用介词译为 Duke Mu paid a visit to/called on Jianshu 更为 简洁。为此，原文中的“问乎”应直接译成英语中的“问” ask,不宜再添加其 他的介词，以免画蛇添足。笔者试译：
Someone asked Zeng Xi, <4Who is more virtuous, you or Zilu?>5 例13汉卒十余万人皆入睢水，睢水左之不流。（《史记?项羽本纪》）
原文描写睢水之战的惨烈场面。汉王刘邦率大军五十六万伐楚，岂料形势 急转直下，反为楚王项羽团团围困。在后退的过程中，汉军士兵被杀不计其数， 士卒十多万人被赶进睢水加之尸体填塞，睢水都被堵塞，不能向前流动。杨宪 益、戴乃迭的译文是 Some hundred thousand soldiers of Han were cut down and their bodies thrown into the Sui, blocked the flow of the river.(杨宪益等，2004: 47)。文中的介词“为”相当于现代汉语中的“因为”，用于引进原因。由于“皆 入睢水”和“为之不流”之间的逻辑关系十分明了，前因后果非常清楚，也就 是说堵住水流的不仅有“尸体”也还有“活人”。基于此，将“睢水为之不流” 译成英语时，就无须在被动语态中使用过去分词加by导出动作的执行者，介词 因而可以省略不译。笔者试译：
More than a hundred thousand Han soldiers were killed or driven into the River Sui, and the flow was stopped.

加拿大（IRCC）
法规依据：Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (SOR/2002-227)"Translations must not be done by the applicants themselves, nor by their representatives or consultants."要求严格——通常只接受以下两类译者：
· 加拿大认证翻译（Certified Translator）
· 有资质宣誓的译者（Commissioner for Oaths等）翻译件上通常需加盖认证翻译的【圆章】
