一、tiger, lion一老虎、狮子
在汉语文化中，虎是“山兽之君”“百兽之王”，是英勇大胆、健壮有力、坚决 果断、威猛勇武的象征。中国人常借虎以助威和驱邪，保佑安宁。传说中老虎还是神 仙和道人的坐骑，道教首领张天师就是乘坐猛虎出行。因此，虎的勇猛形象自然就成 了英勇作战的将士们的象征，故汉语里有“虎将” “虎士”“将门虎子”之称，成语 表达则有“猛虎下山” “如虎添翼” “虎踞龙盘” “虎胆雄威” “虎背熊腰” “虎虎 有生气” “九牛二虎之力”等。不过，人们在尊虎为“百兽之王”的同时，也对虎的 凶残毫不掩饰，如“虎穴”“虎口牙”“拦路虎” “虎视眈眈”等词。
在西方文化中，百兽之王不是虎（tiger)而是狮子（lion)。在英语中，lion是勇 敢、凶猛、威严的象征。英国国王King Richard曾由于勇敢过人而被人称为the Lion- Heart; 而英国人则以 lion为自己 国家的象征。
可见，英语中lion的文化内涵与汉语中老虎的文化内涵是相似的。因此，翻译公司译者在对有关lion或老虎的词语进行翻译时要注意做相关调整，例如，虎将（brave general)， 虎胆英雄（hero as brave as a lion),虎虎有生气（vigorous and energetic: be full of vigor)，虎背熊腰（of strong build )，虎威（powers of general )，as brave as a lion (勇 猛如狮），fight like a lion (勇敢地战斗），great lion (名人，名流），lion-hearted (非 常勇敢的），make a lion of (捧红某人）。
二、bull-牛
古代中国是农耕社会，牛是农业生产劳动中最重要的畜力，这种密切的联系使人 们常常把牛当作喻体来形容人的品质。因此，在中国文化中牛是勤劳、坚韧、任劳任 怨的象征，汉语中有“牛劲”“牛脾气”“牛角尖” “牛头不对马嘴”等词语。
而在西方文化中，牛主要是用来做祭祀的一种动物。在西方的许多宗教活动中， 祭牛是一种主要的仪式，献祭的牛被看作是人间派往天国的使者；同时，在西方文化 中，牛也是能忍受劳苦、任劳任怨的化身。例如，as patient as an ox (像牛一样具有耐 力）。此外，abull in china (闯进瓷器店里的公牛）用来形容举止粗鲁、行为莽撞、动辄惹祸、招惹麻烦的人。但是，由于英国气候湿润凉爽，不利农耕但适宜畜牧，所以 牛的主要用途就是奶和肉。
正因如此，在西方国家牛没有得到像在中国一样的重视。相反，牛在中国所得到 的厚爱在英国却主要落到了马的身上。这是因为在英国历史上人们打仗、运输和体育 运动都离不开马，马也以其力量和速度受到西方国家人们的喜爱。因此，北京翻译公司的译者在表达同一 意思时，汉语中的“牛”往往和英语中的horse相对应。例如：
